Fall season
Salmon is the main target in the fall. The run for us starts in September.
We start fishing for salmon near Isleton on the Sac and then continue to
follow the run up river to the American. In the Sac, we troll for salmon
using Kwikfish, Silvertrons, and Wiggle Warts. We watch the tides down
here and prime time is one hour before, during, and one hour after the tide
changes. This being said, trips start and end at different times, as we try
to get you into fish during these times. Night time is a great time to
fish and night trips are available. We use glo in the dark sardine wrapped
Flatfish.
Steelhead season is also getting under way by October. We target both the
Klamath and American rivers. Other rivers are available depending on water
conditions. The Klamath River is one of my favorites for three reasons.
First, the number of fish in the system, second, the lack of angling
pressure, and third the friendly people of Happy Camp. Happy Camp is 5 1/2
- 6 hrs from Sac, an easy drive up I 5. Expect to catch 10-30 fish a day on
the Klamath, ranging in size from 2-11 lbs. We fish plugs, bait, and flys.
Striper fishin is going in the Isleton area in the fall also. We troll for
Stripers using Bombers, Rebels, and Rattle Traps Again, the tides play an
important role in time of day we fish. Nite trips are available.
Winter Season
Steelhead is what we target in the winter. Jan- March is prime time on the
American. Here we fish Hot Shots, roe, crawlers, and flys. The Klamath is
also producing good numbers of fish at this time of year, with little to no
pressure. Coastal rivers are all fishing good but conditions vary. Timing
is everything for winter steelhead. The best time is after a storm when
the river is dropping and clearing. You can get on a waiting list and when
rivers are in prime shape I'll call and we'll go.
Spring Season
is when the Stripers begin their spawning run up the Sacramento
River. We start looking for them around Rio Vista and then follow them up
river. Trolling is best because of the amount of water you cover. We use
Rainbow Trout Bombers, Brokenback Rebels, and Rattle Traps. March-May is
prime time, although Stripers can be caught all year long. The start of
Striper fishing for us is based on the productivity of Steelhead fishin.
If Steelheadin is slow, we start earlier. If steelheadin is hot, we start
later.
The middle to end of May is when the Shad run begins on the American.
These fish are famous for their fighting strength and are a blast on lite
tackle. Shad are primarily a sport fish and we release 99% of them. The
best times are early in the morning and later in the evening. Shad have
big eyes and the direct sunlight drives them deep in the river and they are
less apt to bite during hi sun hours. We customize trips for shad, usually
4-5 hour trips. Expect to catch 20-40 Shad in an outing. Full day trips
are available. Season runs thru the middle of July.
Summer Season
is spent in two locations, Sacramento river near Redding and in
Idaho Both rivers are fished the same. Flyfishin is most popular, pluggin
is also very effective. The Sacramento River near Redding is probably the
best chance for an angler to hook into a 5 lb. + fish in California 20-30
fish days are possible. Idaho is reserved for former clients and fishin is
free. Rooms must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance and space is very
limited.
